I stepped out into the early morning, and the orange of the slowly lighten-ing eastern sky dazzled my eye and I noticed, for just a moment, the beauty of this world, before the demand of the day prevented me from noticing further.
It's important, it seems to me, to take time, when we can, during our days, especially our hectic days, to stop and notice beauty. To notice the little things, and sometimes big things, that make this life wonderful and worth living. Too often we simply rush by, focused on our commute, our meetings, our plans, our ambitions and, yet, these moments are all around us, they are there, free gifts from Creation for us to simply pluck from the tree of the sublime.
Of course, on days of leisure, noticing this moments is easy and during holidays, even easier. It's one of the reasons that holidays are magical. Those "Holy Days" of our holidays are set apart from the rest of our lives allow us space and time to breath in the Aether of Creation, to inspire ourselves with the sacredness of the ordinary, and the magic that permeates the world around us.
But, here's the rub: it's easy on a holy day. But can we live in the vibrant, creative beauty that fills the world around us on a hectic day? Perhaps some can, but for us mere mortals who have meetings to attend, and bills to pay, it must be enough to snatch glances in moments between meetings. To steal away magic before the day begins, or as we lie in bed drifting off to sleep and imbibe it into our hearts. Perhaps it happen in the simple enjoying our dinner with loved ones, rather than soaking our brain in the nonsense of the world that beams out of your smartphone and rots your brain a little bit at a time. What difference is it to the beauty of your world that there is yet more bad news in towns, cities and states far away from you?
Oh, why do we beam the world humbug into your thoughts, when this eternity is standing ready to take your mind to unimaginable heights! And so, on this day anyway, facing a day of meetings, as I performed the most mundane of tasks, taking out the rubbish, I happened to see a glorious sunrise in the making, and glimpsed heaven off to the east!
You're right, Clint, every day is a "holy day", and there's beauty right in front, ready for us when we pause.
Wonderful! Like anything that keeps us sane in this crazy, busy world, taking time to enjoy these blessings is a commitment that we must work at so that it becomes a habit. Thank you for the reminder!
