100%. Boy do I relate to this. It happens often lately since I've been reading Nabokov. You read a few paragraphs, sometimes just a line or two, and you think, Jesus, why do I even try? But then you take a breath, pause, sigh, and go back to the blank page...because we have no choice. A fire burns within us. We can't NOT write.
Whenever I feel gutted , expressively so, I watch some bad tv,I threaten myself with quitting and then I start writing haiku for at least two weeks . In strong discipline. Counting syllables , haiku about food and crying and lava and screen doors. Suddenly I’m able to have bouts of writing some good meat stories , paralleling words I was never able to pair before. My wring gets better for a while, a long while or short while . And then I try again. Thought I’d share kp
Writing is a calling, and following your calling no matter how well or how poorly you do at it, is an act of service to the world. Thanks for following yours. 🫶🏼
The same is true for painters. When I began I was hopeful until I started seeing the magnificent art that was created before I born and while I studied and suffered through thousands of hours of painstaking learning. Now in my mature faze of life, even with sold work under my belt, I look at those masters and feel envious at their skill. I found there will always be someone with more skill, intuition and imagination than I. But that is no reason to stop. What I have created has value and worth if for no one else than myself. Luckily, all the work paid off yet every day I try and improve. Creating is not a sprint, it is a marathon. And I am still in the race.
